The technological solutions put forward address the symptoms not the system; the solutions derived at COP29 are being designed by those with the levers, of the system that cause the problems in the first place. And based in the same incentive structure: profit, whose internal logic is extraction.

Carbon offsetting and capture do not address the ecological crises of our times, they perpetuate the cause. It’s business as usual.

And may even worsen it. Jevon’s Paradox suggests that increasing energy efficiency and carbon offsetting, allow us to consume and produce more. Yet, we still have just this one beautiful planet. The solution needs a systems view, not an 18th century cartesian one, which ignores knock on effects and the interdependence of earth systems, an emergent whole.
