Livestock make up 62% versus just 4% for wild animals, of the biomass of mammals on Earth. Humans account for 34% (Our World in Data).
80% of the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest is to make room for cattle farming.
We have commodified animals, nature and turned our earth into factory farms.
Adding to the land intensiveness of cattle farms is the land use for cattle feed. Global soya production has increased more than 10 times over the past 50 years, due to increasing meat demand (not due to people eating more plant based)– more than three-quarters of global soy is fed to livestock. This also of course diverts food away from humans on lower income who are then priced out of food, as land and crop are diverted.
Meat production plays a significant part in the destruction of biodiversity, ecosystems and our carbon sinks; the lungs of our earth. Caring for our earth and children’s futures means confronting this.
